413 AD:The Kingdom of Wa and the Kingdom of Goguryeo send envoys to the Eastern Jin Empire.

倭国の歴史(編年体)

The only article about the Japanese envoy recorded in the “History Book of the Jin Dynasty”

“The history of the Three Kingdoms”, a detailed record of the history of the Wa people.
Although Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty (Sima Yan司馬炎) brought an end to The history of the Three Kingdoms, a civil war between the imperial families of the Jin Dynasty (the Rebellion of the Eight Kings) led to invasions by foreign ethnic groups, and Emperor Huai (Sima Xi司馬熾) and Emperor Bin (Sima Ming) was captured and killed by Liu Cong劉聡, who were of a different ethnic group, and fell into ruin in 316. The Jin Dynasty that fell at this time was called the Western Jin Dynasty because its capital was in Chang’an.
Around that time, Sima Rui (Emperor Yuan), a member of the imperial family, ascended the throne in Jianye, the capital of the Wu state during the Three Kingdoms period, and rebuilt the Jin Empire. This Jin Empire was called Eastern Jin and lasted until 420 AD.
There are no particularly eye-catching articles about the Kingdom of Wa, and although there is a mention of Toiden (volume 97) in “the historyh of Jin”, the reality is that it is merely an abstract of Weishi Wajinden in “The history of the Three Kingdoms”.

We really don’t understand the history of the Kingdom of Wa in the 4th century.

Although there are no eye-catching articles, only one article about the Kingdom of Wa is included. That is the following quote:

In this year (413), different ethnic groups from Goguryeo, Wa, and the southwest (Dongtou Daishi) had an audience together and presented local products.

”the historyh of Jin(晋書)” Volume 10(September 413)

The year 413 was seven years before the fall of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The emperor at the time was Emperor An (Sima Dezong), who ascended the throne in 396, but there were a number of rebellions within the country, and In 403, he was forced to abdicate by Huan Xuan.
Huan Xuan founded Huan Chǔ, and the Eastern Jin dynasty was destroyed. However, Huan Xuan was killed by Liu Yu, who advocated the revival of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and Huan Chǔ soon fell into ruin, but Liu Yu’s power grew stronger this time, and the Eastern Jin Dynasty could fall at any time.

Why did Wa and Goguryeo have an audience with an empire that was on the verge of extinction?

East Asia in the early 5th century

About the battle with the Kingdom of Wa over Silla

At the beginning of the 5th century, the Kingdom of Wa engaged in a fierce battle with Goguryeo over which of them should subordinate Silla, which was located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula.
King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo at the time inscribed his battle with Wa on a stone monument, passing it down to future generations. This stone monument is called the ”Monument of King Gwanggaeto”, and it records the many battles fought against the Kingdom of Wa between 391 and 404.
The king of Silla at the time was King Nài wù, and he fought Wa(Old Japan) army many times until his death in 402.
In 392, the year after the invasion of Wa forces in 391, King Nài wù handed Silseong, the son of Dàxī zhì, to Goguryeo as a hostage. King Nài wù tried to draw reinforcements from Goguryeo by offering the son of one of his senior vassals to Goguryeo.
However, Silseong, who was taken hostage, held a grudge against King Nài wù. For If King Nài wù betrayed Goguryeo and formed an alliance with Wa, Silseong would be killed as an example.

At the end of the 4th century, Wa and Koguryo were in conflict in the southern part of the Korean peninsula.

I feel like a kid taken hostage can’t help but hate the king.

Silseong lived as a hostage in Goguryeo for 10 years, not feeling like he was alive.
A turning point for Silseong came in 402 when King Nài wù passed away. For Although King Nài wù had a crown prince, Silseong was able to seize the position of King of Silla with the support of Goguryeo.
After ascending the throne, King Silseong sent princes of King Nài wù hostage to Wa and Goguryeo. I think it’s because I had a strong desire for revenge up until now.

Revenge only begets revenge. What will happen if we lose the backing of Goguryeo?

What happened in 413?

In 413, King Silseong’s greatest protector, King Gwangaeto of Goguryeo, passed away. When King Gwangaeto was taken hostage, King Silseong took care of him, and it was because of this relationship of trust that Silla was able to draw reinforcements from Goguryeo.
After King Gwanggaeto passed away, his eldest son, King Zhǎngshòu, ascended the throne and problems immediately arose. Although he was later known as the King of Longevity because he lived to be nearly 100 years old, he was only 20 years old at the time and naturally had no ties with King Silseong. Believing that he could not subjugate Wa, he sent an envoy to the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

At this point, the Kingdom of Wa thought that by sending an envoy to Eastern Jin ahead of the young King of Goguryeo, they could have the area of control in the southern part of the Korean peninsula officially recognized by the Chinese dynasty and make Silla a subject.

The king will have constant hardships after being replaced.

Well, if you don’t show your strength, no one will follow you.

King Jangsu of Goguryeo also sent envoys to the Eastern Jin Dynasty to counter the movements of Wakoku. Originally, Goguryeo paid tribute to the neighboring country of Yan, so they had no obligation to report King Changshou’s enthronement to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Goguryeo sent an envoy to Eastern Jin in response to the sabotage of the Kingdom of Wa .

It is said that the Kingdom of Wa and Goguryeo each claimed the position of ruler of Silla, and King Jangsu of Goguryeo was sealed as the King of Goguryeo and the Duke of Lè ān jùn.
On the other hand, Wa’s claims were not accepted.
The Kingdom of Wa was furious and began an invasion of Silla. However, it is said that in August 415, the Kingdom of Wa fought against Silla in Kazeshima and was defeated.

Thus, the battle with the Kingdom of Waover Silla resumed, but two years later, in 417, an unexpected incident in which King Silseong was murdered further deteriorated relations with the Kingdom of Wa.

At such a difficult time, the king was killed!

How on earth did this happen?
